Calais

 Did I blog about this?  I joined the LibDems (I'd tried to years before but the web page hadn't worked) in order to attend their party conference and try to help keep the UK in the EU.  Anyway, one impressive thing about the meeting was the glee club, where people sang and learned history together.  I've submitted a song I wrote afterwards on the train to Bath; it may be taken up, but I gather it will be too late.  It follows a number of LibDem tropes, including being sung to the melody of a familiar song (in this case, Bowie's Starman) and running down the other salient parties.  If you aren't keeping up with EU politics, Switzerland already cut off freedom of movement.

Also, I don't think we should only take child migrants; the lyrics are a mix of my own opinion, Tim Farron's closing speech, and obviously David Bowie.

We started burning carbon and we cut down
all – our – trees
We didn't mean to but brought climate
to – its – knees
Now droughts and global warming are leading on to civil wars

One million refugees trying
to – be – safe
sixty million people worldwide
are – dis – placed
that ain't just local that is crazy cosmic jive

There's a migrant waiting in Calais
She'd like to start a business, but she can't get on the train
There's a migrant waiting in Calais
She knows she's not invited but she needs to stay alive, she told me

Let the children move in
Let the UKIP lose it
let all the Tories Brexit

We're an island one day we'll
sink – our – selves
We'll need to move our families
to – the – Alps
Not the Swiss alps, it will have to be Chambéry

Look out your window can you
see – the – light
Sitting selfish on our island
just – ain't – right
One day we'll all be swimming cross the channel too

We'll be migrants swimming to Calais
We're hoping not to blow it, but it could turn out this way
We'll be migrants swimming to Calais
We'll know we aren't invited but we're going to have to stay, I tell you

Let the children move in
Let the UKIP lose it
let all the Tories Brexit

La la la la la
